A quiet self-portrait

Taken with my sister’s help this past weekend, I set up the shot (posing, lighting, camera settings, focal length, etc.), she pushed the shutter.

Neither one is perfect, but I love them.  An intimate, quiet look at mother and son.

Randomness

My business is currently going through a major rebranding and restructure, so soon the blog will be getting a new look.  My website will follow, and you will start seeing a different look for Inspired Images Photography.  I am also considering losing the name and just using my own, but just can’t decide!  Anyway, things will be changing, so keep an eye out!

It is after midnight, and I can’t sleep, so wanted to give those of you that I haven’t met yet and had the chance to shoot to get to know me a little more.

  • I love chocolate chip cookies, vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, strawberry fruit rollups, and Pringles.
  • I love milk more.
  • I sleep with lots of pillows, and despite what my husband thinks, I do use them all!
  • My favorite lens is my Canon 24-70 L 2.8 on my 5D.
  • I love “Friends” and “Will & Grace” reruns, and can’t get enough of “Desperate Housewives”.
  • My favorite colors are pink, blue, and lately, aqua.
  • My parents are Lonnie and Bonnie, my husband’s mother was Connie, and they were all born in the same year.  My husband was born on my grandmother’s birthday, and my son, my dad, my husband, and my grandma were all born on the 6th day of the month.
  • I love weddings, and am terrified of high schoolers, which is why I very rarely shoot seniors!
  • I shoot film for fun with an old Pentax and my Holga.
  • My husband and I have been together for almost 9 1/2 years, married for 4 1/2.  We held our wedding reception at the same place we had our first kiss, to the same song, on the same dancefloor.
  • My favorite place in the whole wide world is Paris.
  • I love to fly, and have traveled to 8 foreign countries and about half of the states.
  • We have a dachshund, a mini shar-pei, and a great dane who thinks he is a dachshund.
  • I choose my favorite teams based on their colors.
  • I can’t stand mini-blinds!
  • I love shopping at Old Navy and The Gap.
  • I love horseback riding, but have only riden once since my horse died 8 1/2 years ago.  I cried for most of the ride.
  • Jodi Picoult is my current favorite author, though “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Neffinegger is my favorite novel.
  • I am an eBay addict.
  • I collect old cameras and old toys.  My most recent finds were some neat old Brownie cameras and a sock dog!
  • I really ought to go to bed now!

Before I head to bed, a quick hello from Maddox!  Isn’t this smile just too sweet???

I love to watch him sleep.  Couldn’t you just eat him up?

Taking it easy…

For 7 weeks, 1 day, 1 hour, and 25 minutes, I have been a mother.  What an adjustment and an experience it has been!  Sleep, nurse, and change diapers – those are my day-to-day activities!  Instead of the Jodi Picoult novels I usually love to read, I am reading books that I haven’t picked up since my own childhood.  The Pokey Little Puppy is my favorite!  Tonight we start our Kindermusik classes (visit kindermusikontheriver.kindermusik.net, it should be lots of fun!), and I am learning sign language for babies to be able to communicate with him well before he can talk.  I love tummy time, and waiting for him to fall asleep so that I can take beautiful sleeping baby pictures.  I find that my cell phone camera works just as well as my 5D in a pinch, even if the images are much tinier and not nearly the quality.

Outside of motherhood, I’ve shot two weddings since having him, and am completely booked for the month of October with weddings and engagement sessions.  I’ve met with a lot of wonderful brides for their 2009 weddings, and am actively planning the small photographer meetup for the end of October.  Devan and I are making plans for WPPI ’09 in Vegas for February, and I am waiting (impatiently) for the new Canon 5D to be released in a few weeks so that I can get my hands on it!

I had to buy a new laptop after my old one was dropped a few too many times, and I don’t have many images moved over to this one yet (they are all on the desktop and I am too tired to go to the other room to get it!), but wanted to share one of my favorites shots of our little man.  This was taken at 13 days old.  Travis and I were setting up a shot in our nursery, and I had laid Maddox down to get myself into position.  I about fell over when I saw him lift his little head and hold it way up!  I was fortunately already laying on the ground, so I grabbed my camera and started shooting.  Isn’t he so handsome?  He’s so much larger now, and I promise I’ll post more images soon!

Erin - Now that is just PRECIOUS!

Trisha - Wendi-
This is the first time I have had a chance to see the pictures of your perfect little boy. He is so animated and is a natural in front of the camera. He must know that his mom will be taking pictures of him all the time because he is such a good poser already. You are so blessed!

Valerie - What a darling baby! He’s just a sweetheart. Congratulations, Wendi!

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

(I am having some issues with the format of this post, so I apologize if it is cutting off the menu to the side.)

As a photographer and now a mother, I wanted to post about the NILMDTS  fund drive that is taking place this month and next.  Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep is an organization I have been a member of for 2 1/2 years, and is very dear to my heart.  This organization is dedicated to giving grieving parents memories of their child that has passed.  I have had the honor of photographing families who have suffered the tragedy of losing a child and giving them something that can never be remade – photographs of their beautiful baby.  It is not easy, getting calls about a birth that the parents know will end sadly, or meeting a family who have a baby at home that they know will not make it to its first birthday.  Regardless of whether the baby is miscarried, stillborn, or was with the parents for a few hours, days, weeks, or months, these images are so important.

If you or someone you know would like more information on this organization, please visit the website by clicking any of the links below.  If you or someone you know experiences a loss, please, call me.  I am available any time of the day or night for these sessions.

With the Month of October being recognized as
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month,
The Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation
holds its Annual Fund Drive for six weeks
starting in mid-September and ending in October.
President Ronald Reagan enacted Proclamation 5890
in October of 1988 to recognize that each year,
approximately a million pregnancies in the United
States alone end in miscarriage, stillbirth, or the
death of a newborn child.  Reagan stated, “A national
observance offers us the opportunity to increase our
understanding of the great tragedy involved in the
deaths of unborn or newborn babies.  It also enables
us to consider how, as individuals and communities,
we can meet the needs of bereaved parents and
family members…

If you are in a place to make even a small contribution
to NILMDTS, please know that doing so will continue
to allow the organization to provide improved resources,
training, communication, and other tools necessary
in support of our amazing contingent of professional
photographers who provide the gift of free remembrance
portraiture to families in need.
 Our next project we are
working on is an online, interactive webinar version of
our Formal NILMDTS Training taught by Co-Founder
Sandy Puc’ allowing anyone in any country with access
to a computer to complete the course online.

Welcome to the world, Maddox!

On Wednesday, August 6, 2008, Maddox entered the world!  I went into labor in the middle of the night, but could never have made it through the entire labor without the help of an epidural, and the incredible support of my husband, Travis.  The experience made me fall in love with him all over again, and every day when I see him interacting and caring for our little boy, I am amazed at how lucky I am to have them both.

Meet Maddox.  Born at 1:14pm, he weighed 8#1oz and was 20″ long.  He is in perfect health, but is so small that he doesn’t even fit into his newborn outfits!  He is absolutely amazing, beautiful, handsome, and quite simply, perfect.  We took these in the hospital when he was two days old, using natural light from the windows, just before we got him dressed to go home.  Ignore the little pressure lines on his arms, he had been sleeping and was all dented up from the blanket and his little shirt.  🙂

I love how the depth of field is so shallow on this, and the focus point lands on the eye hidden under his hand.

For someone so tiny, he has huge feet!

He was not happy about being undressed!

He did calm down after a bit, though!

He is truly incredible.  Thank you again to everyone for your support and love over these last few months!  I am sure this won’t be the last you see of him on here! 🙂.
