King – The Coolest Non-Limo I’ve Seen! Guest Blog by Black Horse Carriage Co

Back in June, I photographed my second wedding at Walnut Grove Farm, and met King.  Now, a lot of people don’t know this about me, but I am a horse person.  Unfortunately, I haven’t had a lot of opportunity to ride in the last few years, not since my own horse passed away, but I have a great deal of respect and love for these creatures.  When Crystal told me they were having a horse-drawn carriage, I was excited.  When I met King, I was blown away.  He is a gorgeous, beautiful horse, and so very tall!  I fell in love with him immediately!

To top it off, his handlers were fantastic, too.  From the beautiful white carriage to their professionalism and matching outfits (as in matching King!) I loved everything about them!  Enough so to ask Kerri to write up a feature for our blog!

Introducing Kerri and King from Black Horse Carriage Company

“You’ve been dreaming about this day for some time now, and so have I. My team and I are experts in the business of creating beautiful memories. Although my business partner isn’t a person, interesting enough, he’s an incredible carriage horse. He goes by the name “King” and he’s certainly treated like one! Before I describe my team, I need to tell you all about, King. Truth be told, he really he pulls the weight in our business- literally. King is our only carriage horse and he has 20+ years of experience. King is right at home in a crowd and in traffic; he’s accustom to noise and commotion.  King loves to pull our beautiful white wedding carriage. The carriage and all the passengers only amount to 20% of King’s pulling ability.

“Let me tell you now about our team.  Here at Black Horse Carriage we love weddings. Weddings are a celebration of the love and commitment between the bride and groom. We believe they deserve the very best on their wedding day! Our timely arrival, gorgeous carriage, and beloved horse, King, make for a dream come true as we transport the bride, groom. This scene is a photographer’s dream, and an unlimited amount of pictures are taken.  King believes he is a guest at your wedding. When the bride and groom arrive, King is available to be approached and petted by his fellow guests.

“Our typical package includes transportation for the bride and her parents to the place of ceremony. During the ceremony, King and Driver will stand and wait to whisk the newly married bride and groom away for an opulent and nostalgic carriage ride.  Black Horse Carriage provides the most elegant and romantic transportation ever imagined.”

You can contact Kerri and King and the rest of the team through their website at Black Horse Carriage Company (blackhorsecarriage.com or by phone at 815-766-0376.

Tell them Wendi sent you!.

Scott Clark Riggens Family Reunion 2010

Every year, my dad’s side of the family has a big reunion.  We have family that comes from all over, and we spent three days catching up, laughing, eating, golfing, swimmming, back-seat-driving, and just plain ol’ having fun!

This year was our biggest reunion ever.  And believe it or not, this isn’t even our entire family!  We were missing one of my cousins and his family from Texas, a cousin who is in Ethiopia adopting two beautiful little girls, and a smattering of cousins who just couldn’t make it.  Even so, it was incredibly impressive to see such a turnout!

Here is my amazing, incredible family!

This is my closest family, the Riggens clan.

Did I mention our back-seat driver contest? My dad and uncle and their cousins set up a course in the back acres of my grandma’s yard, and we all pair up to drive a lawn mower, blind-folded, directed by the back-seat driver behind us!

Here I am with my partner, my dad’s cousin Mike. Who says blind men can’t drive? We did pretty dang awesome if I do say so myself! And so did my mom, running around the course, trying to work my big ol’ camera to get a few shots of us!

I love this shot of my Grandma Louise, watching all of her kin in the contest. She is my sunshine! (shout out to you Grandma, LOVE YOU!)

This shot cracks me up! This is my grandma, my aunt Linda, my cousin Ryan, and his daughter Kiera. Grandma was the driver, Ryan was supposed to be a quiet passenger, but they all 4 ended up shouting at each other and the lack of direction was hilarious!!!

Here I am, riding with my son, being pulled by my dad and my twin nephews, as we take the mower back to the barn. It’s a little blurry as it was getting dark fast, but my mom did a great job getting the shot!

Here is my final share for the night. This is my dad’s cousin, Jim Scott. He’s a chiropractor down in Mexico, Missouri, and has always been one of the most supportive and influential people in my life. He sat Saturday night, in his trademark hat, writing out the sermon for the reunion’s Sunday morning church service, and I couldn’t resist capturing this quiet moment. Jim was the first person last fall to say the word “diabetes” to me, after I had a scary dizzy spell at last year’s reunion. This year he helped a lingering pain in my right foot from an injury earlier in the summer. And he is always a huge emotional supporter, always there with a smile and a loving hug. Thank you, Jim, for being your amazing self. I love you!

I love all of you, Scotts, Riggens, and Clarks!.

Jim Cayer - Looks like you and everyone else had a great time, nothing like spending time with the family…………..

Updates! I Know I’ve Been MIA…

It’s been a while!  Life gets in the way sometimes, and despite my best intentions, my blog gets neglected.  That is going to change, though.  One of the hardest things for me when it comes to blogging is taking the time to select images and resize them and watermark them and upload them and then create the post.  It is quite time-consuming!  After a long discussion with my mentor Natalie Bradley, I’ve decided to change up how my blog works.

If someone wants to see my work, my website is the absolute best place to go.  If someone wants to get to know me, my blog is where they should come.  I used to use my blog for session sneak peaks and to share everything I have been up to.  Unfortunately, when I get busy, I don’t have time to do this, and most of my clients are on Facebook and prefer to have their sessions shared there.  It’s hard for me, too, to choose my favorite images from a session and especially a wedding, so I put it off, because I don’t want to post 20 or 30 images at a time!

So, from here on out, my blog is about me, my life, and my passion for photography, but from a different angle.  Instead of regular sneak peaks and shares, I am going to talk about what is interesting to me at that moment.  I will still post sessions and weddings, but instead of a huge image share, I am going to post the images that really speak to me, and I am going to tell the story behind them.

I am also going to start featuring other wedding and life professionals, and have a wonderful list of guest bloggers lined up.  The first post will go up later this week.  I hope to have one guest blogger a week from here on out, talking about weddings, pets, babies, and other relevant stuff!  I want to provide resources to brides, pet-owners, and families, particularly local resources that may be virtually unknown otherwise.

So, I hope you will stick with me on this crazy journey, and that you enjoy the changes!  Be sure to comment and let us know what you think, and always feel free to make suggestions for topics and guest bloggers!

Before I sign off, here is a shot of my inspiration and reason for, well, everything!  I can hardly believe it has been two years since he entered our lives, and I can’t imagine life without him!

Riding the El – Our Chicago Adventure – Part IV

Who knew that I could turn a 4 hour trip to downtown Chicago into a 4 day blog-fest? 🙂

I’ve ridden on subways and trains all over – St. Louis, LA, Phoenix, Dallas, London, Paris, Germany – but there is nothing quite as fun as the El in Chicago. Why? Just because. 🙂

Following our tour guide, Patrick. I was pretty sure I was going to fall off the edge!

This guy had some serious talent. I’m not even kidding, it was fascinating listening to him play while we waited.

Standing

And sleeping

And praying (she sat holding a pink rosary, mumbling prayers for the majority of the 40 minutes she was on the train)

This woman was one of the prettiest people I have ever seen in my life. If it hadn’t been so busy, and she hadn’t been so sleepy, I might have asked her if I could photograph her. Well, I did photograph her, covertly. I kind of felt like a spy.

And one last guy, waiting for the shuttle back to our airport. He had on a funky outfit that I loved, but it was his mohawk, discreetly hidden under his hat, that caught my eye.

That’s all for now, folks! My next adventure will be to Kewanee in two weeks. In three weeks, my toddler turns two. In four weeks, I run my first 5K. And then my life gets busy again! 🙂.

Chicago – Part 3 – Cloud Gate – Aka The Silver Bean

The last time I was in Chicago for any length of time was 2003. The next year, Cloud Gate, also know as the Silver Bean, was unveiled. I’ve always wanted to see it, and I finally got a chance Sunday night! It wasn’t nearly as big as I expected, but it was still pretty darn cool!

The bean – I mean, Cloud Gate 🙂

I’m getting pretty good at this self-portrait thing. It’s easy with a tiny little point-and-shoot, not so easy with a gripped-Canon 5DMkII and a 24-70 2.8L. Ten pounds of camera weight held out in front of you backwards with the button in an ergonomically-correct position for a camera facing the opposite direction tends to be quite difficult to hold and shoot with! But, I manage. 🙂

See that tiny little dot dead-center of the bean? That’s me. Laying down. Under the bean. Trying to avoid being stepped on by dozens of passerbys that are looking up and not down at their feet, where I happened to be laying. Cool shot, though.

The pigeons looked pretty content up there. I wish I’d brought my big lens to get closer to them, but I only took my 24-70 2.8L with me. Oh well!

Hi Patrick! I think he was laughing at my pigeon amusement.

After that we walked over to a lawn where a concert was getting ready to start. Very cool architecture!

I love people-watching. This group of friends looked totally content as they waited!

We had a delicious dinner after that, and were forced to eat dessert when we got stuck under our umbrella in a downpour. The rain made for a pretty shot as we walked behind this unsuspecting couple back to the El!

Tomorrow? People watching on the El. Keep an eye out for my last Chicago post!.

Jen Creed - Love it! Millenium Park is so cool.

Nikki - Love the under the bean picture!
