Decades of Pregnancy Photos – Maternity Series – Wendi Riggens Photography

When we found out I was pregnant last June, I knew I wanted to announce our pregnancy in a fun and unique way. I couldn’t tell you exactly how the idea came to mind, but one afternoon in August, Christie and I drove the hour to my grandma’s house, set up my studio lights in her kitchen, and took the first images of what became a pregnancy-long project! From hippies to boy bands, I took pieces of each decade and created fun, and sometimes satirically themed sets, centered around my pregnancy. I posted the images to Facebook, where my friends and family raved about them, and where I often received ideas and advice for future sets!

Here are the images, from the 1950’s to the present! I know that the sets aren’t entirely historically correct, but that’s what makes them even more special! 🙂

1950’s
12 weeks pregnant

Hair & Makeup by Christie & Kamry, my awesome team!

Cinnamon Bun baked by Dinner by Henry

Gender Guess, boy or girl?
Outfit sewn by me, yet again! My son and I also tie-dyed the onesies, leaving our stove top all pink and blue (much to my husband’s delight!)
Thank you to my friend Tracy for the location and for pushing the shutter, and my friend Becca for the idea!

1970’s
20 weeks pregnant
Roller Disco Gender Reveal
Suspenders and socks from Amazon, shorts from Target
Special thank you to Tim at Kenny’s Roller Ranch for use of the skate and the rink for this shot! I’m usually awesome on skates, but roller skating while pregnant is much harder than I expected!
Thank you to Annie & Kylie for helping out with this shoot, and to Tracy for the inspiration!

1980’s
24 weeks pregnant
Workout Video
Maternity bodysuit from Bashful Bump
Tights from Target, leg warmers from Amazon
Hair & makeup by Christie, my amazing studio manager!
Heartburn compliments of the baby inside!

I had been trying to think of something to do for the 80’s for weeks, when out of nowhere this idea hit me. I may or may not have run a red light when the idea came! I went home and immediately found and ordered the bodysuit (which happened to be on sale on Zulily at that moment, it had to be fate). This was also the very last shoot I did in our original studio space, before moving to our Jefferson Street location, which was very bitter sweet.

1990’s
34 weeks pregnant
This set took the most work to prepare! You would be surprised just how hard it is to find things from this decade!
Special thanks to the following for helping with the props:
Joe, for the awesome Motorola phone
Linda & Nicole, for the plethora of CDs
Michelle & Valerie, for the posters
Sara, for the NKOTB comforter
Nicole, for the stereo (which still works, BTW!)
And my wonderful son, Maddox, for letting us take down his Spider-Man sheets and Disney posters and turn his room into a teenage girl’s dream room! 🙂
Thank you to Nicole and Erica for helping with the shoot!

2013
Baby Claire is 3 weeks old
Thank you to my mom for helping take this shot, the final in the series.
We talked about doing a shot for the 2000’s, but ended up running out of time, as baby girl arrived two weeks early, and I was rather drained of creativity by the third trimester!

Liz Huckleby - I loved following all of these on facebook! Such a creative and special way to remember your pregnancy!

Edwin Davis - Congratulations,
Now you have a new model to experiment on and take the pressure of your other kids. 🙂
This was a great idea to announce the pregnancy and as always great job on the photography. Loved the time period themes.
