Today, that guest blogger is the awesome Jim Cayer! Jim, also known as &#8220;Homer&#8221; to the inner circle, is an incredibly talented sports photographer in Long Beach, California. I actually met Jim online, and then officially in person in Tulsa at a photography conference last April that we both taught classes at. His sports photography class was definitely the opposite end of the spectrum from my wedding class!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And now, without further adieu, Homer!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1249\" title=\"jim cayer photographer\" src=\"http:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jim-cayer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jim-cayer.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jim-cayer-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<address style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wendiriggens.com\">(Photo by Wendi Riggens)<\/a><\/address>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How I got involved in sports action photography<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I coached my kids\u2019 t-ball, flag football, and soccer teams while they were young and always brought my camera to take various action shots of the kids.\u00a0 It was during this time I found I had an eye for the action and most importantly loved doing it. As my son grew older and continued in sports through middle school and then high school so did my love for sports action photography grow.\u00a0 The weirdest thing is I don\u2019t really watch or pay attention to sports on TV.<\/p>\n<p>This passion for sports shooting has led me to covering my city\u2019s middle school sports program and their championship games, a local high school football team, and recently I was asked by a local sports paper to cover our community\u2019s middle \/ high school and college sports scene.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Why I love sports action Photography?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How can you not love it?\u00a0 There is nothing more exciting or intense than attending a sporting event with the fans screaming and the band playing.\u00a0 What makes it even better is having the best seat in the house while shooting the action!<\/p>\n<p>The thrill of capturing that one shot displaying intensity and emotion all captured with a single expression makes it all worth it!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"pp-insert-all size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Lakewood_Freshmen_vs_Leuzinger_-329.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is my favorite sport to cover?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My favorite sport to cover would have to be track and the higher the level of track the better.\u00a0 With track there is just so much going on and so many opportunities for great action.\u00a0\u00a0 To break this down even further my favorite action to shoot has to be the high jump.\u00a0 I am simply amazed at what these athletes can do and I love capturing that single moment as they wrap their body up and over the bar, it\u2019s simply beauty in motion.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1251\" title=\"CIF_Track_Finals_5-21-11_-330\" src=\"http:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CIF_Track_Finals_5-21-11_-330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CIF_Track_Finals_5-21-11_-330.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CIF_Track_Finals_5-21-11_-330-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is the most rewarding sporting event you have covered?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This has to be the Southern California Special Olympic Summer Games, which are held at Cal State Long Beach each summer.\u00a0 I have volunteered my services with them for the last four years as a photographer and can\u2019t think of anything more rewarding.\u00a0 I take great pride in the ability to capture not just the action, but the intensity and emotion in which our athletes compete at.\u00a0 Because of this I have been given various assignments through the Special Olympics to cover those sports most photographers stay away from, such as bocce ball and golf.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What advice would I give someone who\u2019s new to shooting sports action?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I can go over things like aperture, ISO, and shutter speeds, but for me the most important thing(s) when shooting sports action is positioning and staying low.\u00a0 When it comes to getting the shot it\u2019s all about where you position yourself.\u00a0 A game is constantly changing and moving and so should you as the photographer to get the shot.<\/p>\n<p>What does staying low have to do with sports photography?\u00a0 Everything!\u00a0 Now this doesn\u2019t say there aren\u2019t times where you would want to be standing or at a higher position than the athlete, but on the most part you want to be low, such as sitting or kneeling, and even on occasion laying prone.\u00a0\u00a0 Being low adds impact and makes the athlete appear larger than life.\u00a0 This is especially true for youth sports.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1261\" title=\"jim cayer by charlie shinn\" src=\"http:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jim-cayer-by-charlie-shinn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jim-cayer-by-charlie-shinn.jpg 479w, https:\/\/wendiriggens.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/jim-cayer-by-charlie-shinn-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/p>\n<address style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/allsportsdigital.com\/\">(Photo by Charlie Shinn)<\/a><\/address>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What gear do I use?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Currently I use the Canon Mark IIn, along with the following lens;
